SUCCESSES - Moving beyond an impasse to make a desired career change

A partner in a mid-sized law firm uses career coaching to gain clarity, enabling him to achieve a desired career change and further his professional development

SITUATION

When Doug came to me he was a successful and valued partner in his law firm, yet felt that his professional development was no longer being served in that context. Doug wanted to take an academic position while continuing to work part time in his area of specialization. His firm was not open to this arrangement, so entering academia meant that Doug would have to move out on his own. He felt he was ready to make the transition, yet he found himself resisting making the career change.

Doug felt stuck. He was hesitant to leave a position that was so secure. While confident of his abilities, he experienced some apprehension about forging out on his own. He sought career coaching to help him achieve the goal of career change.

LIFE COACHING APPROACH

We used Intuition Coaching to help Doug find clarity and guidance from his inner wisdom about his career change. When Doug asked for guidance from inner wisdom, a Star appeared. The Star invited Doug to come and sit on it.

From this vantage point high above, Doug was able to view the entire situation from a fresh and very different perspective. He recognized clearly that the value of making the move outweighed the risks. He also perceived potential arrangements for a transition period that had not been apparent to him before.

At the very end of the session, the star said to Doug, “You, too, are a star!” If he needed a boost to his confidence enabling him to make his desired career change, this certainly provided it.

RESULTS

Through Career Coaching supported by Intuition Coaching Doug was able to move beyond an impasse to make the career change he desired.

• The other partners in Doug’s firm agreed to the plan that first appeared in his imagery. His departure became a win/win.
• Doug feels more fulfilled in the academic setting than he did working full time at the law firm.
• The small law practice he has developed nicely complements this work
• The firm he left occasionally calls him to do specialized consulting.
